Abstract

Dental professionals are constantly exposed to various microorganisms, including the new Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which has a high potential for dissemination. Considering that during dental care, aerosols are generated with the spread of saliva droplets (potentially contaminated by the virus), the contamination of professionals and patients could be increased even by taking the necessary biosafety precautions. Although the risk of contamination during dental care has not yet been estimated, standardizing conducts, previously and during dental care, is a necessary attitude to minimize the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 between professionals and patients. The objective of the present work is to propose a model of administrative and clinical inquiry, with clinical, ethical and legal basis, for the decision-making about attending (or not) a patient with dental needs in times of COVID-19 pandemic. The identification of symptomatic patients using systematic instruments to collect information can minimize the risk of contamination by professionals or patients and, in addition, these instruments can subsidize the professional against unfounded claims by patients in cases of non-attendance.
